Siam was certainly a “best of” 2011. HTAFM are on Friction records, known for their gritty artists heavily influenced by hardcore punk. “Amphibian Debt March” exemplifies what there is to still love about the post-hardcore genre, attack and release. With a driving bassline and excellent bursts of falsetto vocals, HTAFM are a band focused on continuing the proud tradition of post-hardcore, not that screamo shit (although I do love Loma Prieta).

This is the scariest message I have ever seen. Could this really be the end of Mediafire? If so, I think we’re all pretty much fucked. Pardon my French, but Mediafire has been the rock of the 21st century “pirate.” File sharing has been happening since the birth of the internet, only recently coming under the gun again (the Napster case being the first notable attack). Where will music of the internet age move to next? Spotify? Last.fm? This is a turning point in file sharing. Will we move on or evolve? I hope you’re as nervous as I am.

Album Review: Grimes - Visions

Could there ever be such a well-polished, Asian influenced record to come out of Canada? Probably not - that seems like a pretty well defined niche. Grimes is the project of Claire Boucher, a Vancouver native thoroughly invested in world music, mostly Eastern. Her voice is a beautiful wisp of air, floating in the ethereal waves of lush synth. Boucher’s voice is very much the focal point of Visions, leaving a lot of the synth textures to inhabit your subconscious. She described the release as “Post-Internet,” which sums up the release pretty well; a lot of the drum tracks sound like keystrokes or error notifications. The Japanese influence is stark, although progressive; each track seems to start off with a simple idea and blossom until there is a landscape of sound for Boucher to rule with her classically trained pipes. Visions certainly is not for everyone, while still grasping on to mass appeal through its synth-pop structure. Boucher offers a mature, refined release for her “Post-Internet” music, allowing all to indulge in her blissful deconstruction.

Verdict: Recommended

Grimes is the moniker of Claire Boucher, a Canadien musician that sounds as if she is from anywhere but the Western world. Fusing world sounds, mostly Eastern influenced, Grimes shower a listener with forward-thinking, progressive synthpop. “Oblivion” features a bumbling bassline that seems to weave in and out, never overpowering. I can see Visions being a huge launchpad for her career, with danceable tunes that never seem to weigh in too heavy, despite showcasing Boucher’s excellent, intimate voice.

Is it safe to say, now that all the reviews are in, Lana Del Rey...
